Accommodations

A block of rooms has been reserved for the HaliCallahanicon at the Esquire Motel here in Bedford, Nova Scotia (a suburb of Halifax, and part of HRM -- the Halifax Regional Municipality) for the weekend of July 6-7-8. The folks there know that most of those attending from amongst the Patronage-at-Large  are likely to want the rooms for Friday and Saturday nights, July 6 & 7, but the motel is at present able to be flexible on both arrival and departure ends -- and I do encourage you to extend your stay at either end if at all possible -- Nova Scotia is a gorgeous province, and even if you confine yourself to the Halifax area there are a great many things to see. I was able to obtain a group rate of CAN$79.00/night for a single queen-size bed and CAN$85.00/night for two double beds. Those are, in other words, the off-season rates even though we will be in-season. HST (15%) and the hotel tax (2%) are on top of that. Rooms are at ground level with almost no steps. There is a pool.

The block is being held for us until 15 June. It will of course be helpful if members of the Patronage would make their reservation sooner rather than later. You should speak with Trudy, the general manager, who is generally available on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays, and Fridays between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Atlantic Time. The phone is (902) 835-3367; toll-free is 1-800- 565-3367. Alternatively, you can e-mail her to make arrangements at the following address:

The block is being held under the name "Barnstead" -- be sure you tell Trudy you are coming for the Barnstead get-together. She will need to take your credit card number in order to hold your reservation -- it won't be charged until the actual dates, and not then if you prefer to pay cash or use a different card. One is required to provide a credit card number upon arrival even if one intends to pay cash. Please also let me know when you've made your reservation, and for what days. It will help me as I work out the various logistics...

Here is the motel's website -- it gives more details on the rooms, etc. -- pictures, too:

I eat fairly frequently at the Esquire Restaurant across the road from the motel -- it has great chowders and good, reasonably-priced family fare.
